The W Column: Counting W's for Week 14

By: Fantasy Junkie of Golden State of Mind

Warriors Weekly Rewind
The Warriors played only 3 games this past week and went 2-1 overall. In fact, they play only 3 games this week, have a 5 game break and then continue their favorable February schedule. In the next few weeks, Baron, Jax, and Monta should get plenty of some much-deserved rest for a late season playoff push.

  • Game 43: Warriors 108, Timberwolves 109- Oy. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Every game is important and the Warriors certainly let this easy one slip away. When the team faces the worst team in the league, they have to win it. With 10 teams vying for the 8 playoff spots, one win at the end of the season could be the difference between playing in the postseason vs hoping the lottery balls bounce the right way. Hey but props to the Twolves for playing their butts off and not giving in despite their awful record.

  • Game 44: Warriors 121, Nets 119- Jason Kidd’s return to his hometown didn’t turn out so nice for him. He had a poor game and right now the Nets are just a bad team. Richard Jefferson is having a great season and continued it in this game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as Monta came through with a career high 39 points and Al Harrington dropped 3 bomb after 3 bomb in the 4th quarter to push the Warriors to overcome an 8 point deficit. It was a roller coaster game with the Warriors coming out on top thanks to some 4th quarter heroics from the usual suspects.

  • Game 45: Warriors 106, Knicks 104- The Warriors swept the season series against the Knicks with a narrow win. Despite trailing again to start the 4th, the Warriors made a quick run to take the lead and never gave it back. The highlight of the night was Andris Biedrins 26 rebounds – setting this year’s NBA single game rebounding record.

The Warriors record this late in January is the best it has been in a long long long time. It’s a great time to be a Warrior fan. Instead of worrying about the Warriors chances of winning the lottery, we’re worried about whether or not the Warriors can beat bad teams and what seed they’ll be in the playoffs.

Tuesday, January 29: Warriors @ Rockets

The Warriors have OWNED the Rockets the past few games they’ve played. Ever since Nellie went small towards the end of last season, the Rockets just haven’t had an answer. Yao Ming is too slow to guard Al Harrington on the perimeter and the Rocket guards just can’t keep up with Baron and Monta. There’s something about facing Houston that seems to excite this team. Perhaps it’s the David vs Goliath (or Yao) feeling. Either way, the Rockets haven’t figured out how to beat the Warriors. In fact, they haven’t figured out how to not get blown out by the Warriors. This game should be no different.

Prediction: 1 more for the W column

Wednesday, January 30: Warriors @ Hornets

I tell you what, the Hornets are scary. They have the best record in the Western Conference – better than Phoenix, Dallas, and San Antonio. I bet nobody expected that to happen. Chris Paul is the MVP right now. Kevin Garnett has 2 other superstars to work with, Paul has no other All-Stars, past or present. But they have a great team. Tyson Chandler and David West are an under-appreciated duo in the post. Peja is hitting his shots and is once again a deadly shooter if you leave him open. The rest of the team fits their role. The only problem with this team? Depth. Their bench is relatively weak so any injuries to the starters could pose trouble – that’s what happened last year. Other than that, it’s hard to find any weaknesses.

Prediction: Another one for the L column

Friday, February 1: Warriors vs Bobcats

The Warriors return from their quick 2 game road trip to welcome back Jason Richardson to Oakland…as an opponent. This fan favorite of the last 6 years comes back and I’m sure he’ll receive a standing ovation. Unfortunately, his team is going to have to take an L back to Charlotte because the Warriors are a tough team at home in part because of us fans. In fact, there will be a serious amount of die hard Warrior fans at the game because it’s GSOM Night 3 so hundreds of members of the Golden State of Mind community will be there (tickets still available – shameless plug).

Prediction: 1 more for the W column

Overall Week 14 Prediction: 2-1
